A turn-key uranium assay system with 0.1ppb sensitivity
UrAssay System There are many circumstances where the monitoring of uranium content in environmental samples is desirable or even a legal obligation. A variety of different techniques have been used over the years for this purpose but all have had their own drawbacks in terms of reliability or complexity. Among the most successful assay techniques have been ones utilising the unique properties relating to the fluorescence of uranyl ions in solution. When excited by ultraviolet or visible light below about 450nm this ion emits a characteristic green spectrum in the region 490 to 540nm.

The advantage of using fluorescence to measure uranyl concentrations is the extreme sensitivity. By using a laser to excite the uranyl ions and a photomultiplier tube to detect the emitted fluorescence, extremely low concentrations can be detected and measured.

The HORIBA Jobin Yvon IBH UrAssay system takes this approach one stage further by using the time-domain to achieve accurate measurements even on samples which would normally need extensive chemical pre-treatment.

Key features

  • Measures uranyl concentrations from 0.1ppb to 40.0ppb
  • Minimal chemical pre-treatment required
  • Rapid - performs a measurement in under a minute
  • Corrects for quenching due to contaminants
  • Rejects short-lived fluorescence from organic contaminants
  • HORIBA Jobin Yvon IBH can customise to meet specific measurement and reporting requirements

UrAssay Software
The sample compartment used in the HORIBA Jobin Yvon IBH UrAssay system connects to the laser and detector modules using fibre-optics and can be located in a fume hood or glove-box if required.   A clear and concise software interface guides the user through the measurement process and displays an unambiguous result. The level of information displayed can be tailored to suit the application. Minimal training is required to operate the HORIBA Jobin Yvon IBH UrAssay system and the software uses a robust operating system.
