A turn-key uranium assay system with 0.1 ppb sensitivity
There are many circumstances where monitoring of uranium content in environmental samples is desirable or even a legal obligation. The most successful assay techniques use the unique properties of fluorescence of uranyl ions in solution. When excited by ultraviolet or visible light below about 450 nm, uranyl emits a characteristic green spectrum in the region 490 to 540 nm.
The advantage of using fluorescence to measure uranyl concentrations is the extreme sensitivity. By using a laser to excite the uranyl ions and a photomultiplier tube to detect the emitted fluorescence, extremely low concentrations can be detected and measured.
The HORIBA Jobin Yvon IBH UrAssay system takes this approach one stage further by using the time-domain to achieve accurate measurements even on samples which would normally need extensive chemical pre-treatment.
